Odour Monitoring at Dumpyard Using Odosense - Case Study
Oizom assisted ESS Enviro to solve the perpetual problem of foul smell from one of the Mumbai's landfill site, Kanjurmarg Dumpyard, which was becoming detrimental to people residing near Vikhroli and Bhandup. Oizom installed Odosense in the peripheral area to monitor odourful gases such as CO, NO2, NH3, H2S, SO2, VOC, CH2O, etc generated from the waste. The solution provided real-time odour monitoring for source detection and impact analysis in the neighborhood for immediate corrective measures.
Problem Statment
Kanjurmarg dumping yard processes 80% of Mumbai city’s waste, with around 3000 tonnes of solid waste collected daily. Not only the stench from the landfill is painstakingly foul and difficult to bear, but it has also started creating health problems for the residents. People residing near Vikhroli and Bhandup have been reported to suffer nausea and vomiting due to the smell. Recently, the government has started paying attention to this problem and had started pressurizing the Municipal Corporation to continuously monitor the air quality in the vicinity and follow the pollution standards. Thus, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) needed to install Continuous Air Quality Monitoring Station in the periphery of the dumping site.
Offered Solution
After a detailed site survey, Oizom proposed to install, Odosense, an Odour Monitoring solution to monitor odourful emissions from the dumpyard. Oizom Odosense is developed to monitor CO, NO2, NH3, H2S, SO2, VOC, CH2O, and CH4. These harmful gases can be detrimental to human health when inhaled for a prolonged time. These units were installed strategically so that the whole dumpyard is covered for monitoring. Odosense monitors real-time gaseous emission to observe its effect in the vicinity through plume dispersion study. It also identifies the source of emission through reverse modelling strategy. It brings great relief to the people residing in the nearby localities by mitigating the inconvenience caused and adverse health effects. This way, it provides a 360-degree emission monitoring solution.
Impact
Peripheral monitoring within a 5-kilometre range of Kanjurmarg dumpyard site helped the officials to identify the exact sources of odour emissions. Data accumulated from Oizom devices has enabled them to take data-driven actions to control and mitigate the issue of odours by taking steps like spraying odour neutralizers and odour suppressants.
