CCOHS Awards Scholarships to Two Occupational Health and Safety Students
HAMILTON, ON -- The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) is pleased to announce the two winners for its 2012-2013 Dick Martin Scholarship Award. This annual, national award is open to students enrolled in an occupational health and safety program at an accredited Canadian university or college.
The two winners, who each receive $3000, are Laure-Elise Forel (Quebec) and Bernard Kenny (Newfoundland). Their academic institutions, The Université de Montreal and The College of the North Atlantic, also each receive $500.
“As an organization dedicated to promoting awareness of workplace health and safety issues, CCOHS is committed to supporting the next generation of occupational health and safety professionals through the Dick Martin Scholarship Award,” said Steve Horvath, President and CEO, CCOHS. “CCOHS congratulates Laure-Elise and Bernard on their achievements and wishes them all the best as they embark on their future careers.”
As part of the evaluation criteria for the award, applicants submitted essays on one of two topics- a prevention essay on workplace violence, or a technical essay of their choice. Laure-Elise Forel’s essay on psychological distress and suicide risks for farmers, and Bernard Kenny’s essay on mental health in the workplace, both showed a thorough understanding of the subject matter.
In the spring of 2002, CCOHS’ Council of Governors established an occupational health and safety scholarship fund in the memory of Dick Martin, a past Governor on the CCOHS Council and a pioneer of workplace health and safety in Canada.
