In an effort to further expand their food testing services, EMSL Analytical now offers analysis for genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and genetically modified foods (GMs).
Genetically modified foods were first introduced to the market in the 1990s. These genetically modified foods are food products that have been derived from genetically modified organisms. GMOs have had their DNA altered through genetic engineering for various purposes.
A number of the genetically modified food products that have made it to market include products with genetically modified corn, soybean, canola, tomatoes, cotton seed oils and other ingredients. Before the introduction of genetic engineering man had relied primarily on selective breeding of plants and animals to obtain a desired final product. Advances in science now allow humans to use very precise genetic engineering techniques.
These advances have been met with both praise and concern by scientists, food regulators and the general public. Critics have been vocal about concerns related to GM foods on several fronts. Potential safety issues, ecological concerns, economic concerns and issues related to intellectual property law have all been raised.
EMSL Analytical has been one of the commercial testing laboratories that has been on the forefront of food safety testing and now offers GMO testing. The company has strategically selected a number of their laboratories that span from coast to coast to offer these services. Many also provide testing services for cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals and other personal care products.
“Advances in science have made genetically modified food products a reality that has the potential to help feed the world’s growing populations,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President at EMSL. “Today over 330 million acres of crops are planted annually with GMOs. Currently the United States does not require labeling of genetically modified foods, but some food manufacturers and many consumers want to know. EMSL has the expertise and experience to answer questions regarding food products and GMOs.”
