Entec remediating major Blyth regeneration scheme

Source: Entec UK Ltd

The first phase of work on a multi-million pound regeneration scheme on the former Bates Colliery site in Blyth, Northumberland, is underway. As part of the scheme, Entec will deliver the remediation of the site along with the contractor Vertase F.L.I.

Remediation by Bates Regeneration Ltd, a joint venture between north east property firm Banks Developments and coal and property company UK Coal, will enable 300 residential properties and a school to be built on the site.

The site has been granted planning permission for regeneration, as a development platform for residential use, together with a school. While the school site is subject to a separate planning application, the whole site is to be remediated as one scheme. As such Bates Regeneration wishes to render the site to a condition in which it is capable of redevelopment without constraints arising from its former use. Such constraints currently exist from a contaminated land and geotechnical perspective and remedial work is required to mitigate them. Entec gained approval for remediation of the site within 3 months of commencement of site investigation (from Phase 1 through to Remediation Action Plan).

In driving forward the scheme Entec has provided a broad range of services, notably flood risk assessment and management, highways and infrastructure appraisal and design, management of remediation contract tender and award as well as the provision of geoenvironmental appraisal and design for the site. A key aspect of the support services was the expedited OJEU Tender process, managed and delivered by Entec to award the remediation Contract.

The site remediation works are currently on-going under the supervision of Entec, with completion of the remediation targeted for Spring 2010.
