Environnement S.A announces the AS32M: the unique analyser allowing quick and direct measurement of NO2
The European Directive 2008/50/EC requires the measurement of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) at minima in all agglomerations of more than 100 000 inhabitants. Currently, some of these sites do not meet the limit values and quality objectives set, particularly on sites located in the vicinity of roads (traffic sites), directly impacted by vehicle emissions. The uncertainties related to measurement instruments and measurement methods have so been placed under special attention.
The reference method for the measurement of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) as described in EN 14211 (2005) is the chemiluminescence. This technique is based on the reaction of nitric oxide (NO) with Ozone (O3) and requires a lot of maintenance and has some drawbacks:
- A risk of error when measuring the concentrations of NO and NO2 vary faster than the duration of a measurement cycle;
- A risk of underestimation if part of the light energy produced by chemiluminescence is lost in the collision with other molecules present in the sample (moisture)
- A risk of overestimation of NO2 concentrations if other species are converted to NO2 in the NO catalytic oven
- A risk of error if the conversion efficiency of the furnace varies;
To alleviate these disadvantages and to provide the most accurate value for the NO2 concentration, in 2010 ADEME sustained the development by Environnement S.A of an analyzer for direct (ie without conversion), continuous and fast (ie less than 10 seconds) measurement of the NO2. This development, conducted jointly between research university laboratories and Environnement S.A, led to the design of the analyzer AS32M. Based on the Cavity Attenuated Phase Shift Spectroscopy (CAPS), the analyzer is designed to provide fast and accurate measurements. Extremely compact, easy to use and to maintain, the AS32M is equipped with a large touch screen allowing one-touch control of the system and even the pre-configuration of analysis tasks.
