EOS climate partners with carrier, University Of Rochester on innovative chiller modernization project
SAN FRANCISCO -- EOS Climate, Carrier and the University of Rochester in New York have teamed up on an innovative chiller modernization project that will bring advanced technology, environmental stewardship and cost savings to the combined medical center and educational campus.
In its first phase, the project will prevent emissions of 56,000 metric tons of greenhouse gases, comparable to the annual carbon footprint of 2,800 Americans. Continuing environmental benefits will accrue over the lifespan of the enhanced cooling system.
The genesis of the project was the University of Rochester’s desire to deliver the most advanced, environmentally friendly cooling system to its students, faculty and staff. In consultation with Carrier, the University is moving forward with a system upgrade for one of its primary chillers, which Carrier will oversee, to enhance the performance of the chiller system by installing new, advanced, energy efficient components, controls and non-ozone depleting refrigerant.
Carrier is partnering with EOS Climate, Inc. to ensure responsible end-of-life management of the used refrigerants -- powerful greenhouse gases that will be destroyed in compliance with the Climate Action Reserve standards. Typically, refrigerants, such as CFC-12 from the University’s system, are extracted from older equipment, reclaimed and resold, eventually ending up in the atmosphere.
“EOS is excited to be partnering with Carrier and the University of Rochester as we create innovative solutions to managing refrigerants at end-of-life,” said Matt Jones, CEO of EOS. “This project represents a real win for all of us - for the students, and most of all, for the environment.”
Under the partnership, the University will receive a substantial rebate on the CFC-12 refrigerant extracted from the chiller. The chiller is one of five in a 21,000 ton chilled water plant which services 158 buildings over 600 acres, enrolls approximately 5,600 undergraduates and 4,600 graduate students.
The partnership is part of EOS Climate’s Refrigerant Revolution™, a multi-industry stewardship system revolutionizing refrigerant management at end-of-life. Under this system, organizations have the opportunity to generate economic value from used refrigerants/equipment upgrades, move above and beyond compliance requirements towards complete life-cycle management, reduce liabilities/regulatory risk from continued use of high-GWP (global warming potential) refrigerant gases, and demonstrate environmental & sustainability leadership.
