EPA seeks comment on decision to regulate strontium
The US Environmental Protection Agency seeks comment by December 19 on its preliminary determination to regulate strontium and not to regulate four other contaminants on the third Contaminant Candidate List (CCL3).
As published in the October 20 Federal Register, the agency's preliminary regulatory determination for the CCL3 list, which included 116 unregulated contaminants, also seeks comment the process used for this round of regulatory determinations, the supporting information and the rationale used to make these preliminary decisions.
The agency found that strontium met the three requirements under the Safe Drinking Water Act to warrant regulation:
- it may have an adverse effect on the health of persons;
- it is known to occur or there is substantial likelihood that the contaminant will occur in public water systems with a frequency and at levels of public health concern; and
- in the sole judgment of the Administrator, its regulation presents a meaningful opportunity for health risk reduction for persons served by public water systems.
The four contaminants EPA found do not warrant regulation include dimethoate, 1,3-dinitrobenzene, terbufos and terbufos sulfone.
