EREF’s Life-Cycle Analysis Workshop Examines Methods of Measuring Recycling and Diversion
Raleigh, NC -- Recently, policy makers, facility owners and other solid waste entities have engaged in discussion regarding whether mass is the best means to evaluate recycling and diversion practices versus a focus on measuring environmental burden through life-cycle analysis.
To establish dialogue and provide more information on this question, the Environmental Research & Education Foundation (EREF) is conducting a one-day Life-Cycle Analysis (LCA) Workshop. The event will be held Thursday, April 6 from 8:30 AM – 3:30 PM at 3301 Benson Drive (Renaissance One Building), 1st Floor (Garden Room) in Raleigh, NC.
The workshop will provide a forum for discussion regarding how LCA currently is used and how it can be used to direct policy and decision making for solid waste management. This includes examining the idea of whether or not federal, state and local goals should be based on weight or environmental burden (which would dictate an LCA approach). EREF workshops bring together industry professionals, practicing engineers, academics, government personnel and policy makers.
Topics for discussion include:
- Using LCA for Waste Management Decision Making: Overview, Challenges and Possibilities
- Considerations for Practical Implementation of LCA by Management Entities and Policymakers
- Tools of the Trade: Available and Upcoming LCA Models
- Life-Cycle Inventory Data: The Key Ingredient to a Robust LCA
- Case Studies Using LCA for Decision Making
- Weight vs. LCA‐Based Goals for Sustainable Materials Management: Perspectives from the EPA, Industry and State/Local Government
Presentations will be given by representatives of the U.S. EPA, Waste Management, Inc., Oregon Division of Environmental Quality, Research Triangle Institute, Golder Associates, RSS, N.C. State University and EREF.
Leading up to this event, EREF will conduct a Life-Cycle Analysis 101 webinar on March 23 entitled Introduction to Life-Cycle Analysis for Sustainable Materials Management. This webinar will present the concept of life-cycle thinking and why life-cycle analysis is used. Participants will learn key concepts and terminology in LCA, using examples from solid waste and sustainable materials management.
The cost to register for the EREF workshop is $95 for consultants/industry personnel and $30 for agency/municipality/academic personnel.
