EUMETSAT contributes to environmental monitoring in Africa
EUMETSAT and the African Union Commission have signed a memorandum of understanding on how the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites will contribute to the African Monitoring of the Environment for Sustainable Development (AMESD) project.
AMESD, the follow-on initiative to Preparation for the Use of Meteosat Second Generation in Africa (PUMA), is an international cooperation programme aimed at providing all African nations with the resources required to manage their environment more effectively and ensure long-term sustainable development in the region. AMESD activities include the deployment of new EUMETCast stations in Africa, the maintenance of existing PUMA stations, and the implementation of five regional projects covering climate and environmental themes such as the management of water, agricultural and environmental resources, crops and rangeland, marine and coastal water management, mitigation of land degradation and nature conservation.
Data from EUMETSAT satellites, in particular Meteosat, will make a valuable contribution to these projects. Satellite technologies will enable African experts to develop new applications to support sustainable development. EUMETSAT will be part of the AMESD Project Steering Committee and will also provide technical assistance and training.
The EUMETSAT Director-General, Dr. Lars Prahm, said: “AMESD will ensure the effective use and expansion of the infrastructure investments made in Africa over recent years within the framework of the PUMA project, supported by EUMETSAT data and products. By contributing to AMESD, EUMETSAT will play a vital role in the African component of the European Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) initiative.”
