European Cogeneration Market
Despite the high investment cost of cogeneration equipment and low payback periods of up to 5-7 years, Europe is quite well placed to rapidly expand cogeneration by 2020. The region is making gradual, though small, developments across technology, skills and supply chain to meet its targets of attaining energy efficiency through cogeneration. The European cogenration market will provide attractive growth prospects for all of the core technologies considered in this study (gas turbines, steam turbines, engines, electric generators, heat recovery steam generators and fuel-fired boilers) throughout the forecast period.
Cogeneration or Combined Heat and Power (CHP) is an efficient, clean and reliable technology for generating electrical power and thermal energy simultaneously from a single fuel source. It can supply both heat and electricity to a wide range of end users from energy-intensive applications like oil and gas industries to small-scale residential uses.
A cogeneration unit typically consists of the following components:
- A primary driver in which fuel is converted into motion and heat
- A generator to transform the motion into electricity
- A heat recovery system to collect the produced heat
The concept of cogeneration was initially adopted in Portugal during the 1980s with the introduction of heavy fuel oil reciprocating engines. Rise in electricity prices and increasing demand for both heat and electricity resulted in a large number of independent power producers entering the market. In addition, Portugal did not have any known reserves of natural gas during the 1980s; hence, heavy fuel oil cogeneration plants were popular in the country.
Capacity and revenue have been used in this study to denote ‘additional’ capacities ordered and revenue generated, respectively, for each product category from 2008 to 2018. The study includes an in-depth analysis of the cogeneration market with specific focus on prime movers, plant types, geographies, fuel types and applications. It covers the key market forces such as drivers and restraints to evaluate their influences on market growth.
