First class recycling honours for Newcastle University
Newcastle University has doubled its recycling rate to 56 per cent over the past year with the help of waste management firm Sita UK.
Last year, the university introduced around 250 recycling bins for plastic bottles, mixed plastics, paper and cans for students around the university’s campus.
The new facilities were supported by an education campaign driven by the university’s waste staff to raise awareness.
The cleaning staff also wore promotional recycling badges, leaving post it notes to remind bin users to recycle.
Newcastle University pro-vice chancellor and portfolio holder for sustainable development Tony Stevenson said: “If you’d have said last year that we could hit almost 60 per cent recycling, I would have not believed you. However, our approaches demonstrates just what is possible, not only are we now diverting hundreds of tonnes of waste from landfill, saving carbon and getting more value out of waste, but we are also saving money. In the current climate that is even more admirable.
“The whole process was very hard work and it was not without hiccups, but the positive attitude of staff and students and the help of Sita UK made it much easier than we thought it would be.”
Sita corporate account manager Claire Stewart said: “It has been a tremendous effort, not just by the staff that have pushed recycling at Newcastle University, but the students and other staff who are embracing the new facilities.”
