Fabweld Steel Products has used its extensive knowledge and experience in drainage issues to produce one solution to help tackle flooding in Leeds.

We manufactured a bespoke trash screen that is designed to keep an overflow of a waterway clear of debris, which is vital to prevent flooding, which has been installed on the Leeds Canal Bywash in Thwaites Lane.

The large trash screen was manufactured to specific dimensions and supplied in sections for assembly on site as part of Stage 3 repairs to a section of the canal’s bywash.

This is one part of work for the £50m Leeds Flood Alleviation Scheme, introduced following significant and widespread flooding from some of the highest river levels ever recorded in the city in December 2015.

The trash screen was supplied to Bam Nuttall and Mott MacDonald, contractors for Leeds City Council. It was designed in accordance with the Environment Agency’s Trash and Security screen guide and manufactured in high-grade mild steel. It was hot dip galvanised after manufacture to BS EN ISO:1461 standard and in accordance to ISO:9001 quality system.

FSP Managing Director Richard Hilton said: “Our experience with flooding and drainage issues made us well placed to provide the solution required for this area of the canal.

The bywash has an important role when water levels are high to allow surplus water to escape. But if the area is blocked by debris, it will back up and cause flooding. The trash screen prevents rubbish collecting in the bywash and can be manufactured to the exact specifications required.

Our team has a history of being able to draw up bespoke solutions to suit individual situations as we did in this case.”
