Fresno, CA -- The President of Turner Designs Hydrocarbon Instruments, Gary Bartman, will be one of the guest speakers at the Ship Air Emissions Management summit 2014.  The seminar will take place on the Queen Mary in Long Beach, CA from October 28-30, 2014.

MARPOL Annex VI under the International Maritime Organization sets limits on sulphur oxide and nitrogen oxide emissions from ship exhausts and prohibits deliberate emissions of ozone depleting substances. It also imposes a global cap on sulphur content in fuel and includes special SOx Emission Control Areas (SECA’s) where sulphur content is even lower. Alternatively, ships must fit an exhaust gas cleaning system (“scrubber”) or use any other technological method to limit SOx emissions.

This timely event gathers the stakeholders involved in controlling and managing exhaust emissions from ships including – ship owners & operators, shipbuilders, the regulators, port authorities, shipping associations, exhaust gas scrubber equipment suppliers and others – to exchange information and strategize cost-effective, practical solutions for compliance, now and going forward. An emissions control strategy that has become popular with ship owners is the use of “wet scrubbers” which use seawater to remove pollutants from the air and neutralize their environmental effect. Mr. Bartman will speak on the issues of continuous monitoring the seawater discharge of scrubber wash water and how discharge regulations can be met. Headquartered in Fresno, California, Turner Designs Hydrocarbon Instruments specializes in the measurement and monitoring of hydrocarbons in water from all sources. Turner has developed a purpose designed wash water discharge monitor which measures poly aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), turbidity, pH, and temperature which are all regulated by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
