Bioprospecting Moringa - Sustainable practices for production and utilization

India October 27, 2012 -- 2 day Global Moringa Meet (GMM 12) on November 25 & 26 , 2012 at Jaipur India shall provide new insight in the Bioprospecting Moringa - Sustainable practices for production and utilization and potentiality of this crop for future exploitation and formulate strategies for developing moringa failsafe farms and also helps new growers to have holistic information on moringa crop.

Moringa oleifera (Moringaceae) is grown widely throughout the tropics. M. oleifera seeds possess effective coagulation properties, and are quite efficient in reducing turbidity, microorganisms from wastewaters and also in sludge conditioning. M. oleifera seeds are reported to have antimicrobial activity and are utilized for wastewater treatment. Although much is said about the seed meal, to date there are no specific reports that describe or identify the components in the seed meal that are responsible for these properties, especially the metal binding properties. In the present study it is proposed to isolate biologically important proteins such as the coagulant protein and the recently characterized lectin from the M. oleifera seeds and make an extensive study to know if these proteins are involved in metal binding.

M. oleifera are important multi-purpose crops in Africa and India. This species originated in India and Africa, but are now grown around the world. There are major production sites in Ghana, Senegal, and Malawi, smaller production in New Zealand and Fiji, and more recently production has begun in Nicaragua and Bolivia. Moringa species are often important famine foods because of their high tolerance to arid conditions due to the formation of very large tuberous roots. The uses of Maringa species are diverse, including the use of roots, leaves, flowers, green pods, and seeds for human foods, and additionally stems and petioles for animals for animal feed. Proteins are important components in the seeds and owing to their charge can bind divalent metal ions specifically. Isolation of the seed proteins and analysis of their metal binding will be a valuable tool to detect the components in the seeds that are capable of clarifying metal contaminated water.
