Golder UK achieves `highly commended` status for geotextile-assisted dewatering project

Source: Golder Associates

The first large-scale application in the UK of geotextile-assisted dewatering of wet silts arising from lake de-silting. This method converted wet and unusable silt into a much smaller volume of relatively dry material that was suitable for reuse on site, thereby reducing the off-site disposal of waste silt to zero.

Golder Associates project manager Jonathan Buckley says: 'I am particularly delighted that this initiative has been recognised in the sustainability category. This project involved close collaboration between our landscape architects, engineers and scientists to deliver a cost effective and environmentally improved technical solution to a long standing problem.'

'This method of dewatering has the potential to be successfully applied to a wide range of other engineering problems and we are looking at using it on other projects,' he added.

The awards, organised and hosted by Ground Engineering magazine, celebrate the very best in geotechnical and geo-environmental engineering in the UK.
