Green party launch manifesto
The Green party would “make it easy to do the right thing” by doubling current investment in recycling and waste disposal and opposing incineration if elected.
An extra £3 billion per annum would be directed to waste management under a Green government, which they claim would create 60,000 new jobs.
“We have to recognise that sophisticated waste management costs more than burying it in the ground,” explains the Green Party manifesto, which calls the burying of waste “no longer acceptable”.
Green Party spokesman Spencer Fitz-Gibbon said: “The targets we have to meet in relation to climate change require us to shift a significant proportion of the economy into recycling.”
The pledges are part of a wider waste management initiative proposed by the Greens, in which “the Government provides the infrastructure, people do the recycling.”
Under such proposals, the Greens would tax unnecessary product packaging and aim for 70% of domestic waste to be recycled by 2015. This would be a stepping stone to the “zero-waste system” also promised by both the Liberal Democrats and Labour in their recent manifestos.
The manifesto also promises improvements at local level, including the local integration of domestic and commercial waste systems by councils and the offer of free compost bins and composting advice to the public.
