Acccel-o-Fac system installed at Bell Island WWTP, Nelson, New Zealand

GURNEY ENVIRONMENTAL technicians have completed the installation of phase 1 of the Accel-o-Fac® upgrade for the City of Nelson's wastewater treatment plant.

The first phase of the order included the supply of wind-powered SERIES 3 aerator/mixers to replace the existing electric aspirator and brush aerators, which are costly to run and maintain (OPEX). Based on aerial photographs, it was also evident that the electric aeration was not capable of providing uniform conditions throughout the large treatment lagoon.

Following a consultation process with Gurney Environmental, Nelson City Council selected the Accel-o-Fac system based on its well-proven and time-tested sustainability credentials and its ability to improve the wastewater treatment process in primary/facultative, secondary and polishing lagoons. The City Council also appreciated Accel-o-Fac’s ability to extend the life of the existing wwtp assets. The order also followed the successful demonstration of the Accel-o-Fac system at nearby Australian water utilities including the Toora wwtp owned and operated by South Gippsland Water. At that particular Australian facility, the Accel-o-Fac upgrade improved wastewater processing, increased typical DO levels (processing power and odour removal), and significantly reduced energy costs (OPEX).

Advanced Technology

The Accel-o-Fac system is advanced technology that can be used as a new-build design or to upgrade existing lagoon-based systems, providing accelerated processing rates, increased DO levels, elimination of short circuiting, accelerated disinfection, odour elimination and accelerated total sludge digestion — all of which allows greater loads to be applied to existing lagoons, thereby extending their life whilst improving performance.

Zero-to-Low Energy Costs

In many cases, the wind-powered Accel-o-Fac system can have a zero ongoing energy cost, yet provide robust treatment. In the case of the Holkham Estate installation operating for over 10 years in Norfolk, UK, the system has maintained superb effluent quality, no odours and no sludge removal or handling required over the decade of use. Obviously, total ongoing OPEX is incredibly low.

At Toora, Australia where an Accel-o-Fac system supplemented and reduced the need for existing surface aerators, the system’s extremely low operating costs provided better treatment and odour control while cutting overall energy costs by 72%, thereby completely paying for the upgrade.
