Harviestoun Brewery use Strathkelvin’s Consultancy services and innovative Respirometer to optimise Bio-plant at new Brewery and reduce consent costs.
The success of Harviestoun Brewery exemplified by their award winning beers, such as Bitter & Twisted, has seen them move from their old establishment to a new purpose built brewery in Alva. The facility has been designed to facilitate Harviestoun's particular requirements, which include a new biological treatment plant. This bio-plant deals with the vast majority of the liquid waste that the brewing process generates.
Ken Brooker of Harviestoun Brewery says: “I decided to treat our effluent on site to reduce our costs and to ensure that we met our Trade Effluent Discharge Consent Levels. I contacted Strathkelvin as they have the expertise to advise on the best approach to take and the instrumentation needed to measure results….. After a series of trials and adjustments to our processing methods we have optimised our effluent treatment regime and can look forward to reduced effluent charges”
Essential to this process was a need to monitor the improvements in the biomass and investigate the plant's capacity to withstand the toxic effects of the liquid wastes from the brewery. Strathkelvin's new Strathtox™ respirometer was utilised for plant-side and laboratory testing due to its rapid test times and the quick provision of automated reports. This produced a dramatic improvement in the bio-plant's performance with wastewater consent levels being achieved by significantly reducing their COD:BOD levels.
