Hotel Mold Problem Results in Arson
In January a man staying at a hotel in Phoenix was accused of setting fire to his room. The accused man is also the one who called 911 to report the fire. Fortunately the fire was quickly extinguished before much damage was done.
When responding investigators arrived they questioned the man who had called to report the fire and quickly became suspicious. The man initially denied involvement, but when pressed, admitted to setting the fire to draw attention to a mold problem in the hotel that had been caused by a water leak.
In Illinois and across the greater Chicago area, EC2, is one of the leading providers of services dealing with mold and IAQ problems. “Mold is a big problem across the Midwest, but fortunately I haven’t heard of any cases in this area where a hotel guest as resorted to setting a fire to bring attention to a mold problem,” reported Ed Chambers, President of EC2. “Although this is an extreme example of a reaction to the problem, there have been other cases where mold damage has gotten so extensive that entire properties have been demolished. The key to problems with mold is to react swiftly by identifying and stopping the source of any moisture that is allowing the mold to grow. Ignoring water incursions will typically result in more damage and costly repairs,” he continued.
Mold is a normal part of the outdoor environment, but is dangerous when found in high concentrations in indoor environments. Since many people spend as much as 90% of their time in indoor environments sometimes even a small amount of mold contamination can cause building occupants to become sensitized. Elevated concentrations of mold in indoor environments can cause a host of medical conditions ranging from allergies to deadly fungal infections.
