How to generate energy from waste

Both society and industry generate a great deal of waste. The management of all that waste is a problem for companies and institutions. Many of those wastes, especially those of municipal origin, often end up in garbage dumps. However, there are other more recommendable and sustainable management methods such as recycling, reuse or energy transformation.

The European Union sets objectives and standards for the treatment of waste. The process of using waste to produce energy is called recovery. It consists of obtaining energy from the waste that cannot be separated and is not recyclable. Among the management alternatives suggested by EU is waste valorization. They recommend mechanisms such as direct incineration, the production and recovery of biogas or the use of waste as fuel.

How to generate energy from waste

Energy Transformation Processes and Technologies

The most commonly used technologies of Waste-to-Energy are incineration, anaerobic digestion and co-incineration. However, there is also a growing trend in the implementation of other newer technologies. Examples of those would be gasification, controlled pyrolysis and plasma gasification. More and more countries are betting on these technologies because energy efficiency is higher, and that means that with the same amount of waste more energy is obtained.

Waste incineration

In this type of technology, very common in industrial processes, the heat from waste incineration is used for steam boilers and to drive steam turbines to generate electricity. During this process, environmentally harmful substances are generated as a result of combustion. These harmful substances are present in the fly ashes generated and need to be eliminated by means of emissions treatment unit, such as technology for VOC purification.

Controlled Pyrolysis

Controlled Pyrolysis is a clean and efficient thermal-destruction method that combines the best of Pyrolysis with the best of Direct Incineration. Some advantages of this thermal destruction process is that it allows a constant mix of residues and it assures a carbon content of the slag under 3%. Moreover, it guarantees the best energy recovery. Since it is based in the gasification process, there is less gas volume as an output, less production of Nitrogen oxides, and less anti pollutant chemicals.

Gasification

In the gasification process, garbage is buried under the soil. These organic wastes emit gases and produce a liquid called leachate. This method transforms these gases into electricity and the liquid into crystalline water. Organic waste is also used to produce biogas for vehicles, electricity and heating.

At Tecam Group we offer professional solutions to companies and industrial plants to generate processes of transformation of waste into energy through incineration, obtaining the highest energy yield with the minimum environmental impact.
