Hurricane Irene Leaves a Path of Destruction across the Mid-Atlantic
As cleanup efforts begin, residents need to be aware of health and safety concerns ranging from infectious microbial pathogens to asbestos and lead.
Lewes, DE, August 28th, 2011 -- Over the weekend, Hurricane Irene left a path of destruction across the Mid-Atlantic. Concise damage reports are still being tabulated, but some areas experienced over 10 inches of rain and tidal surges caused flooding in many areas. Strong winds also caused damage to many commercial and residential properties. The storm left hundreds of thousands of people without power and boil water alerts are in effect in many municipalities across the region.
The hurricane season in the United States begins June 1st and doesn’t end until November 30th. People who live along the nation’s coastlines are at greatest risk of experiencing the full damaging effects of a hurricane, but even those that live further inland can suffer significant property damage.
Unfortunately during powerful hurricanes properties can be completely destroyed, even with the best preparations. Many more properties; however, survive the initial hurricane, but are left with slight to severe damage due to strong winds, heavy rain and flooding. Many of these properties can be rebuilt, but there are environmental hazards people need to be aware of as they rebuild.
“When people begin rebuilding after a hurricane, or any major storm that has caused property damage, there are things people need to be aware of,” stated Susan White, Ph.D., CMC, President of Sussex Environmental Health Consultants (SEHC), a Delaware based environmental consulting firm. “Everything from mold, sewage, bacteria, viruses, chemicals, asbestos and even lead could cause potential health problems for those involved in the rebuilding efforts and for future building occupants. To help inform the public, SEHC has helped sponsor an online educational video about indoor environmental hazards following a hurricane,” she continued.
