The International Association for Impact Assessment (IAIA) is now accepting applications for its “Foundations of Impact Assessment” online training course. This course is currently offered three times per year, with the next course scheduled to start 16 September 2019. The time commitment is 20 to 30 hours over the 12-week period, and the course fee is US $595. The application period will close 27 August 2019.
The “Foundations of Impact Assessment” course is designed for early-career professionals with some environmental impact assessment (EIA) experience and is part of IAIA’s online Professional Development Program (PDP). PDP courses are trainer-supported, meaning that each course participant has the opportunity to meet and work one-on-one with an experienced trainer using online communication tools. With over 16 topics in 5 units, the course covers the basic principles and objectives of EIA, its core concepts and methods, and the fundamentals of EIA review processes and study management. Complementing the course materials are a number of pre-recorded videos of experienced EIA practitioners discussing the application of various topics in their practice.
Since the course’s inception in 2017, there have been 82 participants from 25 countries. Past participants have been from national and regional governments, consulting firms, private-sector corporations in various sectors, and non-governmental and community-based organizations. Said one participant from Germany, “I felt the course was very straightforward and gave a comprehensive overview of the EIA process. I think the main strength is that the course covers really every step of the EIA process. In addition, for me especially, the video sequences were beneficial to gain a ‘practical insight’ to the theory.”
Participant course evaluations demonstrate a high-level of satisfaction with the course and its relevance to their everyday practice of EIA in support of sustainable development. They especially appreciate the way the course develops and builds upon the core elements of EIA as it proceeds and the practical insights available through the participant/trainer conferences as well as the pre-recorded videos. All would recommend the course to others.
