Insitu cleanup of hydrocarbons in 4 1/2 months
Florida Deparment of Environmental Protection issued a site closure order after 1 year of monitoring. The contaminants on site consisted of Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene, Xylenes and Trimethylbenzene.
The owner of the property obtained pricing to clean up the property from several environmental companies and the cost was approximately $230,000.00 for a typical air sparge, vapor recovery system. The time frame for cleanup was approximately 3 to 5 years with no guarantee that the site would ever clean up or the cleanup costs would not increase. This site was priced at $165,000.00 with a pay-for- performance guarantee. A deposit was required and the balance paid in increments (milestones) as the contamination was cleaned up.
The lithology consisted of fine to medium sand from the surface to 25 feet. The depth of groundwater was 10 feet. There were two separate areas that were contaminated on a 3 acre site. The plum for Area #1 was 100’ X 70’ X 20’. The plum for Area #2 was 60’ X 40’ X 20’. The soil was contaminated from approximately 6 feet to 10 feet and the groundwater was contaminated from 10 feet to 20 feet for both sites. The site was treated for 4 ½ months. KSA laboratory collected the final samples on 09/25/06. The laboratory results indicated that all of the monitoring wells were below state groundwater target levels.
