Introducing the TD-5100 ECA – Scrubber Wash Water Overboard Discharge Monitor from Turner Designs Hydrocarbon Instruments

The TD-5100 helps protect the environment from unwanted high levels of contamination in exhaust gas scrubber wash water discharge.

Fresno, CA -- Marine Exhaust Gas Scrubbing systems for Heavy Fuel Oil burning ships are becoming main stream with various configurations including open loop, closed loop and hybrid systems. Oxides of Sulfur and Nitrogen along with particulates and unburned hydrocarbons are removed into the very high volumes of wash water sprayed into the exhaust scrubber system. The wash water can be a combination of seawater with a natural buffer capacity and/or fresh water with buffer added to neutralize the acids formed when sulfur contacts the water. The contaminated wash water is then discharged directly to the sea or contained and treated before discharge depending on the system and the specific rules that apply to that situation. With the exhaust contaminants then contained in the water phase, the environment must be protected from abnormally high discharges.

  • PAH
  • Turbidity
  • Temperature
  • pH

By rule as dictated by MARPOL Annex VI, MEPC. 184(59), Poly Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH), Turbidity, pH, and Temperature must be monitored at all times while discharging scrubber wash water to the sea. However, standard off the shelf sensors have proven less than adequate for rugged marine service in contact with the wash water and their ability to pass marine certification has come to question. With our history of marinized, rugged, built for purpose fluorescence analyzers and monitors for bilge water, drilling rig deck drains, steam condensate, and overboard oilfield produced water, we designed and tested a system specifically to answer the MARPOL requirements for PAH, Turbidity, Temperature with external pH probe.

The Wash Water Discharge Monitor TD-5100 is ready for January 1, 2015 when the low sulfur fuel rule goes into effect.

The pain of not knowing if your wash water monitoring system is really working is now off the table. Our new system provides PAH, Turbidity and Temperature with input for pH all in one monitor. It covers the entire range of concentrations, is self-cleaning, and operators can validate operation for Port State Control inspectors or management onboard at any time.

The TD-5100 is rugged, marinized and uses the same user dictated design philosophy of every Turner Designs Hydrocarbon Instruments’ monitor.
