Know your glass before recycling!
Source: Eco Partners, Inc.
We all want to recycle as much as we can, but it is important to know which materials to place in the bin and which to keep out.
Many well-intended recyclers are confused about glass. Glass containers for food and beverages are 100% recyclable, but not when mixed with other types of glass. Other kinds of glass, like windows, ovenware, Pyrex, and crystal, are manufactured through a different process. When these materials are introduced into the glass container manufacturing process, they cause production problems and defective containers.
Keep non-container glass out of your recycling. If these items are broken, put them in the trash. Any unbroken glass or ceramic products, such as dishes, drinking glasses, mugs, bakeware, and vases, can be given away at donation centers like Goodwill.
The only glass items accepted for recycling are bottles, jugs, and jars that held food or beverages when you bought them at the store. When in doubt, always check with your local recycling program about materials accepted for recycling in your community.
