The energy policy statement from the Welsh Assembly Government has been welcomed as “extremely positive” by the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT). But CAT points out that there are some elements of the report that may be unsustainable.

The report, Energy Policy Statement: Low Carbon Revolution, which was launched on 15 March, states that Wales has the potential to generate twice the amount of electricity it needs from renewable sources within 15 years and lays out how this can be achieved.

CAT has expressed concern that the report contained plans for the implementation of carbon capture and storage (CCS) and to use around 50% imported biomass, which it believes is unsustainable.

CAT spokesman Alex Randall said: “CCS is an unproven technology and our report, Zero Carbon Britain, shows that we can reduce emissions withput the use of CCS or nuclear energy.”
