The London Waste and Recycling Board has set its budget and spending priorities for 2009/10.

At a meeting held on 12 February the Board has outlined a budget of £37 million to help London “divert materials from landfill”.

Chief operating officer Paul de Rivas said that the Board was allocating £37.2m for the first year and was “setting up structures and processes to start to develop a pipeline of projects” to help divert waste from landfill.

The LWRB was set up to promote and encourage the production of waste and increase recycling in the capital (see MRW story). Mr Rivas said: “We will focus on priority materials including; mixed plastics, organic, wood, metals, paper and textiles.” He also said Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment and hazardous waste will be included.

More than £2m will be spent on campaigns, £6m on reuse infrastructure, £9.7m on recycling and energy and £18m on a European fund matching scheme to support sustainable projects in urban areas.

The Board is initially seeking expressions of interest for projects supporting priority material interventions. The deadline for views will be 1 April 2009.
