Market traders in Newham are providing food for nearby farm animals as part of a new recycling initiative.

Stallholders at Queen’s Market, Upton Park are being encouraged by Newham Council to donate produce past its best to pigs, horses, goats and chickens in a bid to reduce the amount of food waste sent to landfill.

This low-carbon move forms part of the council’s plans to save 375 tonnes from landfill from January to March.

By using Newham City Farm the process is also aiding ‘closed loop’ recycling meaning the process remains local.

Councillor Jo Corbett, Newham Council executive member for culture said: “This novel way of working is great on a number of levels. It shows how people and animals can work together – even in these modern times.”

In the first week of the scheme six market stalls donated unwanted fruit and vegetables and it is hoped that more will follow.

As an added benefit, recycling food waste in this way is proving to be cost effective for the farm.

Theresa Salmon, manager at Newham City Farm said: “It will save us over £100 a month in bills.”
