Lansing, MI, July 29th, 2013 -- The industrial hygiene profession has a long history of helping to protect and enhance the health and safety of people at work and in their communities. In fact, the term “industrial hygiene” gained popularity back in the early 1900s with the formation of the Industrial Hygiene Section of the American Public Health Association.
Industrial hygiene professionals are dedicated to anticipating, recognizing, evaluating and controlling a wide range of chemical, physical, biological and ergonomic stressors. For over 50 years, the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH) has been promoting the profession and administering the Certified Industrial Hygienist program. Through these efforts, ABIH has become the world's largest, premier organization for certifying thousands of professionals in the practice of industrial hygiene.
The ABIH’s public awareness efforts have been in conjunction with the implementation of appropriate professional standards designed to serve the public, employees, employers, clients and the industrial hygiene profession. Industrial hygiene professionals who have earned their CIH certification give priority to health and safety interests related to the protection of people, and act in a manner that promotes integrity and reflects positively on the profession, consistent with accepted moral, ethical and legal standards. Each of these attributes is essential in the continued growth and recognition of the profession and the CIH program.
“In addition to the priorities of the CIH program, which have made it the premier certification for IH professionals, ABIH also works to increase the general awareness of the industrial hygiene profession,” reported Tracy Parsons, CIH, Administrative Program Manager at ABIH. “It’s a win-win situation for everyone when the public and decision makers are thinking about the health and safety of the community and workers.”
