Students and faculty at Carroll Elementary School in Peabody, Massachusetts have complained of ‘sick classrooms’ and the school is now subject to a state inspection. Despite the mold that has already been found the city’s health department has given the school the ‘all clear’.
As teachers and children across the country begin the new school year an increasing number of them are discovering mold problems at their local schools. The problem of mold contamination in schools is not a new phenomenon, but it appears to be growing in frequency across numerous states and in many parts of the country.
Health complaints at Carroll Elementary School have ranged from chest congestion, sneezing and itchy watery eyes. The mold has been discovered in several kindergarten classrooms and in addition to sick children; two teachers now report experiencing allergic reactions from the mold. So far the source of the moisture causing the mold issues has not been revealed.
As budgets for aging schools get tighter some maintenance projects are postponed or delayed indefinitely. Issues such as water infiltration, faulty plumbing and HVAC failures can all lead to potential indoor air quality problems involving mold and other contaminants.
LA Testing, an affiliate of EMSL Analytical and a leading provider of mold and indoor air quality testing services, has been busy helping school districts across the country test for dangerous mold contamination. “Educating school districts about microbial contaminants is the first step in helping to solve this widespread problem,” reported Ben Sublasky, National Director of Client Services for LA Testing and EMSL Analytical. “LA Testing has made a tremendous amount of resources available to schools and parents to help them better understand the dangers of mold exposure,” Sublasky continued.
