Infrastructure support service company May Gurney has won two contracts worth GBP£60m to provide waste management services in North Yorkshire and West Oxfordshire.

Under the contract with North Yorkshire County Council, May Gurney will manage 17 household waste recycling centres. The seven-year contract is valued at up to GBP£24m with the option to extend for a further three years.

It has also signed a seven-year contract to collect waste and recycling from households in West Oxfordshire. The service will provide weekly food waste and recycling collections, as well as fortnightly household waste and garden waste collections, which are now free.

Currently, West Oxfordshire recycles 34% of its waste, which is below the 2010 40% target set by the Oxfordshire Joint Waste Strategy. But West Oxfordshire District Council hopes that under the GBP£21m contract the new collection services will push its recycling rate to at least 60%.

May Gurney chief executive Philip Fellowes-Prynne said: “May Gurney continues to consolidate its position as one of the UK’s key providers of front-line services in the municipal waste market. These new contracts support the council’s sustainability targets by helping residents to recycle more and by reducing the amount of waste going to landfill. Our proven expertise in developing and delivering complex front-line service solutions and supporting our clients’ efficiency goals underpins our continued growth.
