Aquabio Ltd of Worcester have been awarded three further turnkey membrane bioreactor contracts at Simpsons Malt, Kanes Foods and S I Group. These plants reinforce the company’s leading position in the UK industrial MBR sector and dominance in large scale industrial water reuse.

The plant at Simpsons Malt is a new aerated flow balancing, MBR and RO plant enabling partial reuse of the trade wastewater to potable standards. Aquabio’s high flux AMBR membrane bioreactor treats water to discharge to the River Tweed which has always been internationally famous for its salmon fishing. Part of the 1400m3/day of AMBR permeate is treated to potable standards using reverse osmosis and UV; to provide safe and consistent water for reuse in the upstream processes. Aquabio has also been awarded the contract to upgrade the carbon adsorption for the site’s borehole water.

Kanes Foods have also commissioned Aquabio to provide a second MBR and RO reuse plant on their salad and vegetable processing site in Evesham. The original AMBR/RO plant was commissioned by Aquabio in 2000 and was the first plant in the UK food sector to treat and recycle wastewater to potable standards. This plant treats a total of 1,200m3/d, with 850m3/day through the MBR, and producing up to 600m3/day after the RO for reuse within the factory. After nine years of successful operation the second plant is needed to treat and recycle water due to factory growth.

The new facility is an Aquabio low energy MBR and utilises variable crossflow conditions, backflushing and automated flushing to optimise power consumption. An additional 1,200m3/d of wastewater will be treated and a further 600m3/day recycled as potable water back into the factory.

The third MBR plant at S I Group is being constructed for contaminated ground water treatment. A five month on site pilot study was carried out using one of Aquabio’s containerised MBR units. This optimised the design, particularly for phenol removal. This close collaboration with the client resulted in significant savings from the alternative aerobic thermophillic process being investigated.

All of the new plants are scheduled for start up in 2009 and incorporate Aquabio’s proprietary control, automation and state-of-the-art, high shear, Slot Aeration of biomass.
