Additionally, lead, brass and aluminium in waste ammunition from the MPS’s firing ranges has been turned into jewellery and photo frames.
The MPS has also increased its recycling rate by 41.4 per cent in the past five years by introducing office recycling schemes, which work on a commingled system. It hopes to reach a recycling target of 45 per cent by the end of 2010.
MPS environmental team recycling officer Sarah Foster said: “We’re constantly looking for new ways to recycle and new markets for our recyclable materials, to conserve resources, save energy and money.”
Other initiatives include recycling 40 tonnes of police uniform, as well as body armour which has been reused to manufacture cars, and turning over 20,000 tonnes of used cooking oil from the Met’s canteens into biodiesel.
