Michigan-based Associate Adds to GBB’s Growing Midwest Presence

(Fairfax, VA – May 9, 2011) -- Gershman, Brickner & Bratton, Inc. (GBB) is pleased to announce that Michael A. Czuprenski, P.E. has joined the firm as Principal Associate. Based in the Detroit metropolitan area, he adds to GBB’s growing Midwest presence and brings to the table his extensive public-sector, hands-on and strategic solid waste management expertise. Prior to joining GBB, Mr. Czuprenski spent 21 years as Operations Director at the Southeastern Oakland County Resource Recovery Authority (SOCRRA), a 12-community solid waste consortium in Michigan serving approximately 100,000 households.

“We’ve known Mike for over a decade,” noted Bob Brickner, Executive Vice President, “and his strong waste management background, hands-on experience in all aspects of waste management planning and implementation, enthusiasm, and professionalism is a great fit for GBB and our clients.”

“I’ve never worked with a consulting firm I admired more, so am honored to be able to join GBB, and truly excited about being able to apply the skills and lessons learned throughout my years in the public-sector as I work with clients as part of GBB project teams,” said Mike Czuprenski, GBB Principal Associate.

At SOCRRA, Mr. Czuprenski was involved in all aspects of the consortium and had wide-ranging responsibilities including: overseeing the overall operations and maintenance of the 500-ton/day solid waste transfer station; construction and operations of the 26,000 square foot 80-ton/day dual-stream Materials Recovery Facility (MRF); developing the 120,000 cu yd/yr yard waste composting operation from the ground up; developing the household hazardous waste & used electronic equipment recycling program; and procuring the refuse, recyclables and yard waste collection services for member communities.

Major accomplishments during his successful tenure at SOCRRA include: 1) co-leading (with Bob Brickner) the team that conducted the complex procurement and negotiation of contracts to allow for SOCRRA to take over responsibility for collection services from its member communities. The resulting decrease in contracts, from twelve to three, netted members a 16% annual savings and provided for increased recycling opportunities and waste diversion. This effort also allowed SOCRRA to secure 20-year commitments from members for the delivery of refuse, recyclables and yard waste to SOCRRA facilities; 2) assisting in original design, staffing and operations of a six-sort MRF and eventual conversion to a dual-stream MRF (operated by authority staff), that produces major cash surpluses each year; and 3) securing the necessary yard waste composting site layout, legal and regulatory approvals, equipment, staffing and procedures to provide a reliable, regulatory-compliant, neighbor-friendly operation that cost-effectively produces quality garden compost as a major revenue generator.

Prior to SOCRRA, Mr. Czuprenski spent 3½ years as an Environmental Engineer with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources working on a host of environmental contamination and remediation activities. He was also an Environmental Engineer/Planner for 3½ years with a small consulting firm in Oakland County, Michigan after beginning his career as an Engineer with the Detroit Water & Sewerage Department (DWSD) where he spent over six years in various roles (process engineering, industrial waste control, residuals disposal) assisting the 850 MGD Wastewater Treatment Plant as it gained compliance with the U.S. Clean Water Act while under Federal Court receivership.

A registered Professional Engineer in Michigan, Mike has a Master of Science (Environmental Health Sciences) and a Bachelor of Science (Environmental Sciences Engineering) from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor.
