The building consulting experts at Sussex Environmental Health Consultants help medical facilities find environmental solutions to infections

Lewes, DE, May 2nd, 2011 -- Hospital administrators and infection control professionals know firsthand the dangers of hospital acquired infections (HAIs).  Many of these infections are due to Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureas (MRSA), Clostridium difficile and other potentially deadly pathogens.

A number of these infectious agents are spread through contact or airborne transmissions. Additional routes of transmission include droplet, common vehicle and vector-borne transmission.  Resources for the Future recently reported in the Archives of Internal Medicine that in 2006, hospital acquired infections added $8.1 billion in additional medical costs.  Most infection control experts agree that the rate of these infections has been increasing.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) there are reportedly 1.7 million hospital acquired infections diagnosed each year.  These infections cause or contribute to 99,000 deaths per year.

Sussex Environmental Health Consultants, LLC (SEHC) is an environmental, health and safety consulting firm located in Delaware that has the expertise to help hospitals and healthcare facilities tackle environmental conditions that can allow the spread of these dangerous pathogens.  “The cost in human lives and the financial costs associated with nosocomial infections are enormous,” stated Susan White, Ph.D., CMC, President of SEHC.    “Infection control issues in hospitals can be caused by a host of conditions.  These can range from hygiene issues to more complex situations dealing with room pressurization, HVAC systems and other building science issues. Surface sanitation and indoor air quality, or IAQ, is a crucial environmental concern when you have people with weakened immune systems such as what is found in virtually all healthcare settings.  SEHC can play a crucial role in monitoring conditions and suggesting corrective actions,” she continued.

SEHC recently cosponsor a public outreach video on MRSA which can be seen at:
