Miller Recycling Corporation has taken numerous steps to reduce its overall electric demand at their 73 Plymouth Street recycling facility. These steps have resulted in a substantial reduction in electricity consumption, saving the company an estimated amount of $50,000-$70,000 per year in electric cost.

“In 2008 we began to analyze our power needs and electrical consumption at our 73,000 sq. ft. recycling facility,” said Randy Miller, company President. “Our large warehouse requires considerable power to operate lighting and numerous pieces of processing equipment. Some of this equipment operates non-stop, 8-10 hours per day.”

“Our main processing line includes a high density–high production baler and conveyor that creates substantial electric demand.”

Miller Recycling Corporation consulted with a number of efficiency experts, and decided their first step would be to upgrade the existing plant lighted with new – high output florescent lighting. They also placed motion detectors on much of this lighting – which would eliminate the need for lights in inactive areas. The company also upgraded all offices, again installing motions to lessen demand in idle areas or vacant offices.

“These actions immediately resulted in an electric savings of approximately 18 - 20%, which was substantial considering that this just addressed lighting, and not the larger electric motor demands,” said Miller.

The next step addressed these large drive motors with the installation of equipment that reduced the power demand of these components. “There are many new technologies available to decrease power demand at startup and during operation, we took advantage of this technology.” This resulted in a further power reduction of approximately 5%.

“Our next step was Solar,” said Miller. “In the spring of 2012 we installed a 300Kw, 1200 panel system on the roof of our recycling facility. To date this system has resulted in an additional power reduction of 60-70%. We have been very pleased with the results.”

“We continue to keep our eye on additional advanced technologies to further reduce our electrical needs – we are in the process of researching ways to reduce our demand charge now. We have seen our mid year electric bill decline from over $7,000 per month – to just over $700 – so the savings have been substantial.”
