The City of San Diego’s Miramar Water Treatment Plant is among an elite group to reach this high level of performance

DENVER -- The City of San Diego’s Miramar Water Treatment Plant has received the prestigious Phase IV 'Presidents Award' recognition from the Partnership for Safe Water.

The Partnership program is an initiative developed by the USEPA, AWWA, and other water organizations representing water suppliers working to provide their communities with drinking water quality that surpasses the required federal standards, through treatment plant and distribution system optimization. Phase IV goals are the highest possible level of performance that can be achieved in the four-phased program. The Presidents Award recognizes achieving Phase IV’s very stringent individual filter performance goals for turbidity.

The City of San Diego has been participating in the Partnership’s treatment program since 2004 and is a charter member of the distribution system program. The Miramar WTP received the treatment program’s Directors Award in 2012, joining the city’s Otay WTP in attaining this level of achievement.

'Achieving the status of the Phase IV Presidents Award is an exciting honor and a very significant accomplishment in our continuing effort to meet the stringent performance goals,' said Dean Rauscher, Senior Water Operations Supervisor. 'Plant optimization and continuing to improve water quality is our daily goal as we strive to further satisfy the requirements and attain the Excellence in Water Treatment award'.

The Partnership for Safe Water is a voluntary self-assessment and optimization program for water treatment plant and distribution system operation. More than 220 utility subscribers, collectively serving more than 85 million people, are committed to the Partnership’s goals of providing safe, high-quality drinking water through achieving operational excellence in water treatment. Partnership members participate in a rigorous four-phase self-assessment and peer review process, developed by industry experts, and are recognized for their commitment to delivering safe water to their communities.

The Partnership for Safe Water is sponsored by the American Water Works Association, Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies, Association of State Drinking Water Administrators, United States Environmental Protection Agency, National Association of Water Companies, and the Water Research Foundation.
