Orange, CA, August 15th, 2011 -- This month, U.S. News & World Report published a story from HealthDay News about exposure to household mold and infants’ asthma.  The article discusses a new study that analyzed seven years worth of data covering 176 children.

The Cincinnati Childhood Allergy and Air Pollution Study found that exposure to mold in the home during a child’s infancy greatly increased the risk of developing asthma.  In fact, there was a threefold increased rate of developing asthma in children by the age of 7 when they were raised in homes with mold.

This is not the first research making the link between childhood asthma and mold.  A few years ago a study, published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives, indicated that children’s asthma risk more than doubled if their home had the smell of mold. The study looked at 1,900 children from Finland and reported a 2 ½ times increased risk of asthma when a moldy odor was detected in the home.

According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA), 60 million people in the United States suffer from allergies and asthma. The AAFA calculates that the cost to the United States for asthma alone is $18 billion dollars a year.

“The cost in medical terms and lost productivity to society from asthma is only part of the picture,” reported Brian Mcfarland, Vice President of Legends Environmental Insurance Services, a leading provider of insurance coverage to the environmental industry.  “The AAFA reports that 11 people die each day from asthma in the United States.  Understanding that mold can trigger asthma in children and adults means that people who are at risk should not reside, work or go to school in indoor environments with elevated levels of mold.  Fortunately there is an entire industry of indoor air quality professionals that have dedicated their lives to identifying and remediating homes and buildings with mold problems,” he continued.
