Bramhall, UK: May 24 2013 -- More retailers are interested in recycling carpet in response to rising requests from consumers for responsible disposal solutions to their end-of-life carpets and installation off-cuts, according to Carpet Recycling UK, the industry’s association for recycling and reusing carpet.

Speaking after May’s 2013 Buying Groups’ National Flooring Show, CRUK Director Laurance Bird said: “Retailers are thinking more about offering recycling and take-back schemes as services to their customers who are increasingly aware of the need to dispose of waste carpet materials in a more environmentally-acceptable way.

“While the logistics of recycling are easier for some than others, CRUK is working hard to ensure efficient collection schemes are in place to encourage greater participation by retailers and develop new outlets for greater reuse and recovery of carpet materials. Several pilot trials are being conducted across UK to recover installation off-cuts in the most economical way. Results of these will be disseminated at our Annual Conference on June 19th in Birmingham,” he added.

Also exhibiting were CRUK members Cormar Carpets, Wools of New Zealand, Abingdon Flooring, Forbo Flooring Systems, The Mohawk Group and Anglo Recycling.

Anglo’s National Account Manager, Lee Bridge reported excellent feedback from visitors on their wool-rich carpet recycling process that turns manufacturing and post-installation off-cuts into new underlay products. The firm, based in Whitworth, near Rochdale, also offers off-cuts collection services.

Lee said: “From a number of enquiries we had about our fitters’ take-back scheme, we signed up several new participants at the show. This represents additional useful volume of around one tonne per month, so we’re delighted with this support and how the show has worked for us!”
