NACWA Resolution Opposing Legislation that Undermines 20 Years of Clean Water Progress for the Great

0

On Tuesday, the Board of Directors for the National Association of Clean Water Agencies passed a resolution opposing Section 428 of S. 1645, the Senate Appropriations Committee proposed FY16 appropriations package for the Department of Interior, Environmental Protection Agency and Related Agencies. If enacted, the provisions would undermine the 1994 Combined Sewer Overflow Policy that Congress enacted in 2001 and require communities in compliance with this policy to go back to the drawing board, revamp Long Term Control Plans, and potentially spend billions of additional ratepayer dollars to address an issue that isn't causing the majority of water quality challenges in the Great Lakes.

The resolution calls on Congress to strip the provision from a final appropriations package and work with NACWA on policies would better address the water quality challenges the Great Lakes face.
