Last month KTNV, the local ABC affiliate in Las Vegas, did an investigative report into a popular public senior center that has been closed for over a year. The senior center’s indoor pool was a place for area seniors to recuperate after injuries and surgeries, as well as to keep fit.
The senior center had been shut down several times in the past four years since it was built, but never for this long of a period. According to the news report it turns out the pool’s warm temperatures were causing excessive humidity throughout the area’s circulation system resulting in repeated problems with mold growing in the center. The good news for area seniors is the pool is reopening and this December it will be remodeled to prevent future mold problems from reoccurring.
Mold can cause a host of health effects for people who become exposed. Seniors and others with weaker immune systems are often at greater risk to mold exposure than others. Mold can cause infections as well as allergies, not to mention it can also be a trigger for those suffering from asthma.
LA Testing, an affiliate of EMSL Analytical and a leading provider of mold and indoor air quality testing services, has a long tradition of helping individuals, municipalities and industry test for dangerous mold contamination. “Preventing mold problems in the first place is the goal for health and safety professionals dealing with the public,” reported Ben Sublasky, National Director of Client Services for LA Testing and EMSL Analytical. “When seniors, children or people with weakened immune systems are involved it is that much more imperative to not allow these people to be exposed to mold,” Sublasky continued.
