New Portable Echo Repeater System
Chelsea Technologies Group (CTG) won a tender from an American company for a portable echo repeater system, with a further system going to Singapore next year.
This new system is a miniature version of CTG’s flagship towed sonar test and evaluation system, VASS (Versatile Acoustic Source System). A new low frequency hand-deployable acoustic transducer will be employed along with a portable PC for operation from small vessels. It includes much of the functionality of the larger VASS system and now operates down to 300Hz whilst maintaining its portable advantage.
The system is controlled by an easy-to-use Graphical User Interface commanding the Digital Signal Processor which is used to Echo Repeat, Transpond, and produce Calibrated transmissions with up to 24 Tones simultaneously.
It provides a highly versatile and flexible sonar test system that is configured by simple mouse or keyboard selections. In addition to instant configuration changes, it allows desktop set-up of complete trials programs in advance hence avoiding costly errors in signal definition during calibration trials.
Existing users of the VASS & PERS systems include QinetiQ, the UK Director of Submarines, NATO SACLANT Undersea Research Centre, La Spezia, Italy and the Belgian Navy.
