Infrared (IR) analysis is widely used worldwide for determining the amount of oil and grease in water as it is a cost-effective measurement technique that can be easily done on-site or in a laboratory. Since water is a strong absorber in the mid-IR region where oil and grease is measured, a solvent is used to extract the oil prior to analysis.
As there are numerous solvents that can be used for oil in water measurements, it is important to know the various factors that should be considered when choosing a suitable solvent. For example, if your oil sample contains light end volatile components that you wish to measure, it is best to choose an infrared transparent solvent for the extraction process to enable the extract to be measure by transmission. If you wish to have your data correlate with EPA Method 1664, hexane is the best choice of solvlent.
