NIB opens credit line for environmental projects in Poland
A new environmental loan programme totalling EUR 30 million has been signed by the Nordic Investment Bank (NIB) and Poland's Bank Ochrony Srodowiska (BOS).
The funds provided by NIB will be used for projects promoting renewable energy solutions, energy-efficiency measures and wastewater treatment systems. The programme is aimed at municipalities and small- and medium-sized enterprises, as well as private households and housing companies.
'NIB's loan programme will be complementary to BOS's own financing. BOS has a strong market position in the municipal sector and is therefore the ideal partner for NIB in order to identify and finance local projects in Poland, a country with a tremendous impact on the health of the Baltic Sea,' says Johnny Åkerholm, NIB President and CEO.
Through subprojects, the loan programme will help reduce discharges of phosphorus and nitrogen into watercourses and the sea. Poland accounts for 25-30% of all discharges of these elements into the Baltic Sea. Projects eligible for NIB financing will also improve the collection and sorting of solid waste, as well as develop the generation of renewable energy and increase the energy efficiency of buildings.
NIB has the possibility to supplement the loan programme with a technical assistance grant fund to support identification and development of projects relevant for the HELCOM Baltic Sea Action Plan (BSAP).
The Nordic Investment Bank (NIB) is the common international financial institution of the eight Nordic and Baltic countries. NIB provides long-term financing to the energy, environmental, transport, logistics and communications, and innovation sectors for projects that strengthen competitiveness and enhance the environment. NIB has the highest possible credit rating, AAA/aaa, with the leading rating agencies Standard & Poor's and Moody's.
