Ozonator Industries Ltd. is pleased to announce the results of the testing done by the University of Saskatchewan’s Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering on the ozonation of methotrexate (MTX) in water. Ozonation is the core treatment technology used in the Ozonator Industries NG-3000 solution in treating bio-hazardous waste. It was found that “MTX was totally degraded with ozone in a 10 minute reaction time.” The tests were performed by Dr. Zahra Jeirani and Dr. Jafar Soltan, and published in a report entitled “Oxidation of Methotrexate by Ozone”.
Pharmaceutical pollution of the aquatic environment has been recognized as an alarming emerging issue in environmental chemistry. Among various classes of pharmaceuticals, cytostatic chemotherapy drugs are of particular environment concern because they are potentially carcinogenic, mutagenic and genotoxic, even at low concentration. Methotrexate (MTX) is one of the most effective and widely used medications for treating certain types of cancer, psoriasis and rheumatoid arthritis. Even in low concentrations, MTX is considered a toxic organic pollutant in water, with the possible adverse effects including liver damage, nausea, abdominal pain, fatigue, fever, dizziness, neurological damage, memory loss and kidney failure.
The original ozonation technology testing was managed by Bosgoed Project Consultants in 2005. According to Gary Bosgoed, President and CEO of Bosgoed Project Consultants, “We are pleased that these independent test results further validate the Ozonator NG-3000 technology as a key tool in eliminating toxic Methotrexate found in biomedical waste.” Mr. Bosgoed went on to say “the report emphasizes the importance of treating biomedical and cytotoxic waste at the hospital waste collection system, which is a key advantage of the product.”
