The Welsh Nationalist party Plaid Cymru has pledged support for binding waste prevention targets in its 2010 election manifesto.

The party has proposed a goal of recycling 80% of domestic waste by 2020, as well as the introduction of a higher level of landfill tax.

Plaid Cymru, which currently has three MPs in Westminster, has also promised to campaign for significant changes to public procurement and planning legislation. The party would enable local authorities to favour materials from recycled and local sources. It also opposes the creation of the Infrastructure Planning Commission – a body the manifesto terms “undemocratic”.

“The future of our planet depends on urgent action to reduce emissions and the adoption of a different, more sustainable lifestyle. Plaid Cymru puts the environmental crisis and sustainable development at the heart of its policies,” claims the manifesto.
