Powerday kicks off renewed Chelsea contract with zero waste to landfill status
Waste management company Powerday has celebrated the signing of a renewed waste collection contract with Chelsea Football Club, with the news that the club has reached zero waste to landfill status.
Food, bottles, packaging and office waste from the Stamford Bridge stadium and the Cobham training grounds are collected by Powerday and taken to the company’s nearby Old Oak Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) for processing.
The company uses a combination of overband and eddy current magnets, manual sorting, trommels and screeners and Pellenc optical separating technology to sort and recycle the material. Anything non-recyclable is shredded for fuel, as part of an energy from waste programme.
The renewed contract, which was signed towards the end of 2009, marks the tenth year of collaboration for the two companies.
Powerday sales and marketing director Simon Little told MRW: “As our process has evolved and we have invested more money, our recycling rates have continually improved. With sustainable management of waste increasingly important to our clients, this is something they place a significant value on.”
Chelsea finance and operations director Chris Alexander said: “Our commitment to this is something we take extremely seriously. We have a number of initiatives to get our staff and fans aware of their own impact on the environment as well as installing energy efficient systems at both Stamford Bridge and Cobham, which is one of the most environmentally friendly training grounds in the world.”
Powerday also recently announced the renewal of its contract to recycle waste from the Chelsea Flower Show. In 2009, the company recycled 600 tonnes of waste from the show, including biodegradables such as wood, soil and food.
