Professor Trevor Baker awarded Paul Melchior Medal
Professor Trevor Baker has been awarded the Paul Melchior Medal at the 18th International Symposium on Geodynamics and Earth Tides for 'outstanding service and leadership”. This prestigious medal is awarded every four years to recognise outstanding scientists with huge experience and influence in the Tidal Community.
Trevor worked at the National Oceanography Centre in Liverpool for over 35 years, being part of its evolution from the Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory (POL), and before that, part of the Institute of Oceanographic Sciences. He led the group at the POL which made pioneering measurements in Earth tides, including the study of how the solid earth responds to loading by the ocean tide, using highly accurate gravity meters. This work led on to other geodetic research at the POL using GPS and absolute gravity techniques applied to the study of long-term land and sea level changes. Trevor's scientific publications include more than 160 high-quality scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals.
