Progress Made in Treating Health like Safety

As many who read our last blog will be aware, our next generation personal sampling pump, new noise dosimeter and mobile app have been shortlisted for the BSIF Product Innovation Award. Indeed, we recently learned that our entry for the awards progressed to the later stages of the judging process, so at the very least Casella will feature in the presentation ceremony! Now, although everyone here at Casella will be delighted if we are announced the winner, we’re already celebrating the fact that a product designed to protect worker health has been valued as equally as those designed to protect the safety of workforces.

Treating health like safety is a campaign we’ve been championing for some time now, so for a suite of products that helps to protect occupational health to be shortlisted for an award that has been biased towards safety is a major achievement. But what’s most pleasing is that increasing numbers of companies are demonstrating the importance of weighting health and safety equally through their sustainability (CSR) agendas ‘encouraged’ by campaigns being run by organisations such as the BOHS and IOSH

This is evident in every order we receive for our noise monitoring and dust sampling products, but also in the actions of companies that are proactively introducing health protection measures. One highway specialist, for example, is providing road workers with strings of UV reactive beads to highlight dangerous and damaging sun exposure risks during the upcoming summer months.

There are signs that show industry is moving in the right direction in terms of treating health like safety, but there is still much progress to be made. Innovators such as ourselves have a big part to play; the more effective, efficient and easy to use monitoring devices are, the better.

The winner of the Product Innovation award will be announced at the Safety and Health Expo on 16th June 2015. Visit us at Stand P2234 during the show to see our award nominated next generation monitoring solutions first-hand.
