Scottish Green manifesto mentions recycling only once
The Scottish Green Party has made only a single mention of “recycling” in its new election manifesto.
This appears in the statement “recycling creates six times more jobs per tonne of waste than landfill” – made in the context of the party’s green jobs pledge.
Instead the new 16 page manifesto refers to “energy” 23 times, with many pledges to support renewable energy, and carbon capture technologies, as well as providing an “energy generating economy”.
However, the document does make indirect reference to the waste management industry, with broad commitments to “introduce tight restrictions on incineration, especially close to communities”, as well as pledges to create a “low carbon, low waste society”.
Green MSP for the Lothians and Westminster candidate for Edinburgh East Robin Harper, told MRW: “We live in a planet of finite resources so building a green economy means protecting existing jobs in recycling and creating more jobs to support a low-waste society. After all, recycling creates six times more jobs per tonne of waste than landfill and six times more again than incineration. Greens will also promote a living wage to ensure that people in low paid jobs are lifted out of poverty and give extra help to small businesses and social enterprises, including those operating in the recycling industry.'
